A driver who fled the scene of an accident, which led to the death of a lawyer in Machakos County late last month, was on Wednesday arraigned in court a day after handing himself over to local authorities.

Police say that on September 24, 2022, Fidelis Mutuku, was behind the wheel of a lorry that rammed lawyer Morris Mulei's motorbike on Kangundo road, killing him on the spot and gravely injuring his pillion passenger, Elvis Muindi.

Mutuku is said to have fled the scene immediately after the incident and remained in hiding until October 4, 2022 when he surrendered himself to Machakos Police Station.

He was charged with reckless driving and causing death by dangerous driving.

Machakos Law Courts Principal Magistrate Ann Nyoike however ruled that the suspect be released once he posts a cash bail of Ksh.100,000 or a bond of Ksh.200,000 and a surety of a similar amount.

The case will be heard on October 24, 2022.

The lawyer, whose body was moved to Montezuma Funeral Home, will be buried at his family home in Kangundo, Machakos County, on Friday.
