Machakos: Driver who hit, killed lawyer then went into hiding for 10 days charged
A driver who fled the scene of an accident,
which led to the death of a lawyer in Machakos County late last month, was on
Wednesday arraigned in court a day after handing himself over to local
authorities.
Police say that on September 24, 2022,
Fidelis Mutuku, was behind the wheel of a lorry that rammed lawyer Morris
Mulei's motorbike on Kangundo road, killing him on the spot and gravely
injuring his pillion passenger, Elvis Muindi.
Mutuku is said to have fled the scene
immediately after the incident and remained in hiding until October 4, 2022
when he surrendered himself to Machakos Police Station.
He was charged with reckless driving and
causing death by dangerous driving.
Machakos Law Courts Principal Magistrate Ann
Nyoike however ruled that the suspect be released once he posts a cash bail of
Ksh.100,000 or a bond of Ksh.200,000 and a surety of a similar amount.
The lawyer, whose body was moved to Montezuma
Funeral Home, will be buried at his family home in Kangundo, Machakos County,
on Friday.
