Machakos County shifts blame to Treasury over derived funds for health workers
Speaking in Matungulu on Saturday, Machakos County Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi admitted the county has been unable to run its affairs due to lack of funds, noting the situation may get even worse if the funds are not disbursed.
He however pleaded with health workers to resume their duties as they await further action, noting that their absence from hospitals will largely affect county residents.
"Sincerely speaking let us be fair to these people. National Government please do your duty because when you deny all counties the money to help Kenyans," he noted.
Speaking at the same function, Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu said the situation is escalating and there is a need for apt solutions to arrest the situation, stating that doctors have problems with the new health funding model the Social Health Authority (SHA), lack of enough medicines in the county hospitals, late payments and promotions.
"Our people are hurting. This matter needs to be addressed swiftly so call a meeting with doctors so that they continue serving Kenyans," she said.
Doctors and clinical officers in the county have downed their tools for four months as they lament the lack of pay and frail working terms.
The situation has raised alarm as many patients have been denied access to medical services from private hospitals, occasioning a court battle between striking health officers and the county with court orders directing the striking officers to resume duties.
