Kenyan teachers will start enjoying the benefits of a new collective bargaining agreement, signed between their unions and their employer, the Teachers Service Commission.

The deal sees teachers getting a salary hike of up to 29.5 percent for the lowest earning teachers, raising their salary from Ksh.23,000 to at least Ksh.29,000.

The CBA will cost the government Ksh.33.7 billion and will be implemented over four years.

The teachers will also enjoy other perks relating to their welfare. The deal was signed after hours of talks between the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, the Kenya National Union of Teachers, and the Kenya Special Needs Education Teachers on Friday at the Kenya Institute of Special Education in Nairobi.

"Teachers will have something to smile about. It is true that the lower cadre of teachers, as mentioned by the TSC chairman, as compared to the upper cadre has received a hefty increment in terms of percentages," said KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu.

"We have removed career progression, which has been a thorn in their place from 2018, and progressively it will end on July 30, 2026. The career progression led to the interdiction of some teachers and has been under review and will not be in effect," added KUPPET SG Akelo Misori.
