Linet Toto steals the show in Rwanda as DP Gachagua calls her 'one of Kenya's miracles'
Mr Gachagua on Thursday flew out to Rwanda for the Youth Connect Africa Summit attended by many African leaders and hosted by Rwandan President Reuben Kagame.
Toto was among the dignitaries who accompanied Mr Gachagua for the event and he showered the 24-year-old with praises referring to her as a Kenyan political miracle.
Other leaders who made the trip included MPs Sylvanus Osoro, Ndindi Nyoro, Patric Munene, Mohammed Ali, Pamela Njoki, Vincent Kawaya, John Paul Mwirigi, Ken Aramat and Karugu Thangwa.
“I came with 12 young leaders who were elected the other day and whom we have given immense responsibility in the National Assembly so that the young people can start taking their rightful place,” Gachagua said.
“I came with one of the miracles in our country, a little young girl, 24 years old and was elected as the Woman Rep of Bomet county defeating a mature experienced Woman,” he added as the crowd cheered.
The second-in-command used the just concluded August General Election to serve as a motivation to the African youths noting that about 33 per cent of elected leaders were young people.
“In the last elections we held on the 9th of August, our National Assembly has 349 members, young people of your age went into the elections, sold the youth agenda and said they had what it takes and the people were so persuaded,” he stated.
“The people of Kenya indicated their faith and believe in the young people and 33% of all the members of the NA elected are below the age of 35 years.”
Gachagua similarly urged African leaders to focus on empowering the youth for a better future and stability of the continent.
“You’re the future of the continent, the future of the people of this continent, especially the older population in your hands. You have what it takes to take the continent to the next level,” he remarked.
He added: “Granted, you have the age, you have the energy, the passion, you have the zeal and most importantly the brains to turn around the continent.”
He underscored that the potential of economic prosperity for the continent rested in the hands of young people as he implored them to rise up to the occasion and take their positions.
“Don’t shy away from responsibility, you have the ideas, the creativity, energy, the motivation and all that remains is for you to occupy your space and do what must be done,” he advised.
“I’m challenging you the youth of Africa, when you go back home, take leadership positions in your country, push the youth agenda from inside. Take the right place at the decision-making table.”
