Legio Maria distances itself from Rongo church where 57 sick people were rescued

The Legion of Maria Church leaders address the press on April 25, 2025.
The Legion of Maria Church has distanced itself from any
affiliations with the controversial Melkio St. Joseph Mission of Messiah in
Africa Church, which has come under public scrutiny for its contentious
teachings and doctrines.
Speaking at the church’s headquarters in God Kweru, Migori,
Pope Lawrence Ochieng emphasized that the Legion of Maria is a duly registered
church and that its teachings do not contradict societal morals.
He clarified that at no point has the church discouraged its
members from seeking medical attention or pursuing formal education.
The Pope acknowledged that while members of the two churches
may share similar religious attire and references, they do not share any common
interests or beliefs.
His statement was supported by Cardinal Chamalengo Ongao and
the resident priest, Moses Ochieng, who reiterated that the Legion of Maria has
its own distinct and well-defined doctrines that should not be confused with
those of other religious groups.
The leaders also took the opportunity to caution Christians to
remain vigilant and avoid religious leaders who introduce them to questionable
or harmful practices.
This comes after police officers early this week rescued 57 indisposed persons who have been seeking healing at the controversial Melkio St.
Joseph Mission Messiah church in Rongo, Migori County and halted prayer
activities at the church.
On Wednesday, there was drama at the Rongo Police Station after
the worshippers refused to go home, insisting that they could only return to
their church, where two members reportedly perished after refusing to seek
medical attention.
The 57 followers of the Melkio St. Joseph Missions of
Messaiha Afrika Church will now remain in custody for another 30 days as
investigations into alleged cultic practices continue.
In her ruling on Thursday, Magistrate Susan Mutava granted
the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) 30 days to detain
them, saying the matter at hand is of great public interest and requires
investigations to conclude without interference.
