KWS discovers human remains at scene where hyena attacked Multimedia University student

The Kenya Wildlife Service has revealed that human remains were recovered from the exact place where a hyena attacked a Multimedia University student.

In a statement following Tuesday morning protests by Multimedia University students over the hyena attack on one of their own, KWS said its team found the remains of another person who had been attacked by the said hyenas.

"Regrettably, another (PAMU) team left on the ground discovered the partial remains of a human being at the scene, which were then retrieved by the Kenya Police. The identity of the deceased has since been confirmed and family members contacted," KWS said in the statement.

Regarding the protests by the university students, KWS said it had engaged them through their university leadership, and promised to put in more efforts to discover more hyena dens and drive them back into the Nairobi National Park.

"PAMU team promptly put down one hyena and proceeded to further launch an operation to identify any surrounding hyena dens. The veterinary team accompanying PAMU are investigating the hyena carcass, to ascertain whether they could be infected with rabies or other zoonotic diseases," KWS said further.

21-year-old Kelvin Mwenda was attacked by the hyenas on Monday evening and left with grave injuries. He was is receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital.
