KTDA’s Kirundi pledges policy reforms to boost smallholder farmers’ profits

KTDA’s newly appointed National Chairman, Mr. Chege Kirundi, has outlined his vision for a fresh strategic direction aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability of the tea business for smallholder tea farmers managed by KTDA.

Mr. Kirundi announced a shift in the board's focus to over 160 directors from the western Rift Valley during a weekend meeting in Nakuru, introducing a new guiding principle: "Farmers First."

He acknowledged that the business landscape had changed significantly between KTDA's establishment as a parastatal in 1964 and its privatization in 2000.

According to Kirundi, in order to keep up with these changes, the board is currently developing new policies and updating existing ones to maximize farmer returns on tea investments.

Emphasizing the need for sustainability across all business pillars, Mr. Kirundi stressed the importance of strong leadership and consistent stakeholder engagement to address the challenges facing the sector.

He pointed out that tackling these issues requires a collaborative and proactive approach.
