KNUT wants KNEC held responsible for irregularities in KCPE results
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) officials in
Kisumu now want the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to take full
responsibility of the discrepancies in the just released Kenya Certificate of
Primary Education (KCPE) results.
Kisumu branch Executive Secretary David Obuon says KNEC CEO
Dr David Njengere must explain to Kenyans why such happened and that he must
take the whole blame.
Obuon said the future of many pupils has been interfered with
as a result of the mix ups.
“When results were released, there was a 3-hour delay in the
SMS access of results. Are parents going to be refunded for the money used yet
results were not delivered? Who will refund them?” Obuon posed in a press
address on Saturday.
He said the KNEC CEO Njengere must not pass the blame to the
SMS service providers adding that KNEC is solely answerable to the anomalies.
“We are no longer going to take them easy, somebody must be
sleeping on his job, who is this?”
Obuon said the errors in the makes awarded are unacceptable
adding that it took so many years to prepare for the examinations adding that
someone must come out and answer the hard questions.
“We want KNEC to make public the formula they use for
moderation. We want to know why there are particular schools where students
scored the same marks in some subjects. In some schools children have scored 3%
in social studies. Where on earth can that happen?” Obuon further questioned.
In an earlier statement, KNEC addressed the discrepancies
reported by some candidates in the just released 2023 exams.
The council noted that it had received appeals over some
errors in results obtained through the short code 40054 that was provided by
the Ministry of Education.
“It was brought to the attention of KNEC that results for
some candidates had misalignment of the marks and grades in Kiswahili as they
were placed at the Kenyan Sign Language,” read the statement from Njengere.
