The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has slammed the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) over Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers’ protests which have been witnessed countrywide.

KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu has accused KUPPET of sponsoring the JSS teachers’ protests across the country to push the government to employ them on permanent and pensionable terms.

He argues that it is wrong for KUPPET to mislead the JSS teachers to protest, as it is a mandate of trade unions. Oyuu added that the teachers risk termination of their contracts, yet KUPPET will not be able to defend them.

The Secretary-General said that KNUT also wants the JSS teachers to be employed on permanent and pensionable basis but it can only be done through a proper procedure and not street protests.

The KNUT boss added that as trade unions’ roles should be advocacy and giving proper guidance to their members, but not to mislead them.

He spoke during a fundraiser at Gagra Catholic church on Sunday, where he stated that dialogue is the only solution to the current issues of the JSS teachers, and not protests as spearheaded by KUPPET.

Oyuu expressed KNUT’s commitment to having a discussion with the government, through the Ministry of education to talk and see how those teachers can be absorbed on a permanent and pensionable basis.

In the last two weeks, the teachers held protests in various counties, threatening to down their tools in January if their employment terms are not revised.
