The Kenya National Library Services (KNLS)  has officially launched a virtual library containing over 200,000 digitalized reading materials at Maktaba Kuu in Nairobi which is the first of its kind in Africa.

These reading materials include digitalized books, periodicals, research papers and government publications which will be available from any internet-enabled device globally.

Youth Affairs, Sports and Arts Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, during his speech, said the Ksh.250 million start-up seeks to encourage a reading culture and increase knowledge, creativity and skills in particular fields at any given time saying it will help improve the education sector, especially CBC.

“We no longer have to worry about the age of these publications, and we no longer have to worry about the fact that we only have one copy surviving. We no longer have to worry about very precious maps because they are in this space where they are safe and available to access,” said ays CS Ababu Namwamba.

“The library system will also provide cloud-related systems to other ministries departments and agencies. This is consistent in digitizing government services and improving access to information,” added the CS.

KNLS Board Chairperson Robert Theuri Maina also added that this new platform will help improve on the mode of governance.

"Access to information is key to enabling citizens to participate in governance and legal action. Give in mind; libraries are considered a powerhouse and a strategic resource," he said.

The virtual library will have assorted resources that are set to attract a nominal daily membership at a fee  of Ksh.20, weekly at Ksh.100, monthly at Ksh.500, bi- annual at Ksh.1500 and annual memberhip at Ksh.2500 all payable via wireless payment platforms.

Ababu declared 12th July an annual national reading day while reading a speech from President William Ruto.
