The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has signed a return-to-work formula with the Embu County government on behalf of doctors in the devolved unit who recently went on strike.

The medics had issued a 21-day strike notice on December 21, 2023, which lapsed on January 9, 2024, and they subsequently took to the streets the next day.

A meeting was however called by the Embu County administration, chaired by Governor Cecily Mbarire, on January 11, 2024, where an agreement was reached to suspend the doctors’ go-slow.

A bi-partisan team was also formed at the meeting to address the issues raised by the medics and facilitate negotiations with a view of coming up with a comprehensive return-to-work formula.

The KMPDU senior officials, led by National Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah, and the Embu County leadership on Wednesday met again to receive and go through the formula presented by the bi-partisan team.

Among the issues agreed on by the Dr. Atellah and Governor Mbarire-led teams included the adoption of the signed bi-partisan committee report as part of the return-to-work-formula as well as the conclusion of all pending disciplinary matters within six months of their inception.

They also agreed to deposit the bi-partisan committee report and the return-to-work formula in court on January 22, 2024, and subsequently withdraw the legal dispute filed by the Embu County government.

KMPDU and the county administration further committed that doctors who had participated in the strike would not be subjected to victimization of any kind, further that the industrial action now ends immediately.

“Our unwavering commitment is directed towards optimizing the quality of services provided at our health facilities, striving to ensure that they consistently meet the highest standards,” said Governor Mbarire.

“Through a dedicated focus on continuous improvement and efficiency, we aim to enhance the overall healthcare experience for our people, reinforcing our dedication to the well-being of Embu people.”
