The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists' Union (KMPDU) has congratulated Dr. Ouma Oluga on his nomination as the Principal Secretary (PS) for the State Department for Medical Services.

Oluga was among those added to President William Ruto’s government on Thursday in a bid to accelerate the implementation of his administration's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

In a subsequent statement to newsrooms, KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah lauded Dr. Oluga's leadership and dedication, describing his new role as a well-earned recognition of his contributions to the health sector.

“Dr. Oluga's dedication and leadership during his tenure as KMPDU Secretary General played a pivotal role in advancing both union and the broader health sector in Kenya. His new role is a well-deserved recognition of his unwavering commitment and expertise,” stated Dr. Atellah.

“We are confident that he will bring the same passion, vision, and diligence to the Ministry of Health, ensuring meaningful progress in our healthcare system. We look forward to the positive impact of his leadership in this crucial position.”

Dr. Oluga, a former KMPDU Secretary General, was instrumental in championing the rights and welfare of healthcare workers in Kenya.

His tenure at the union saw him lead critical negotiations, including the 2017 doctors’ strike that resulted in improved terms of service for medical practitioners.

His nomination, and impending appointment, comes at a crucial time when Kenya’s healthcare sector is grappling with multiple challenges, most notably the implementation of the new Social Health Authority (SHA) that has been marred by a myriad challenges.
