Kisumu residents stage protest after man attacked, robbed, stripped naked, then killed
Transport activities on the Mamboleo-Miwani road in Kisumu County were paralyzed
for the better part of Saturday morning after dozens of locals barricaded the
road protesting the killing of a middle-aged man by criminals on Friday night.
The locals, led by area MCA for Kajulu Ward Benson Adega, lit
bonfires along the road demanding for action from police over rising cases of
insecurity.
The deceased was attacked, robbed and stripped naked by an
unknown number of thugs on Friday night and later succumbed to his injuries at
the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH).
MCA Adega said last month another trader was shot dead by
thugs, adding that such attacks have caused panic among the locals especially
traders at the busy Mamboleo market.
Adega stated that there's need for increased police patrols,
adding that they demand creation of a permanent police post in Mamboleo market
to address insecurity challenges.
“Naomba serikali ilete polisi wa kupatrol hapa Mamboleo…watujengee
patrol base hapa ndani…population imekuwa mingi kwa soko,” he said.
Kisumu East sub-county police boss Joseph Obara, who
addressed the irked locals, confirmed that the area is a hotspot, adding that
they have mapped it out and that there shall be increased patrols by both
uniformed and non-uniformed officers.
“This road to Wigot is a hotspot, we have had another incident…during
this festive season, we have made security arrangements on how to cover it,” he
stated.
Traders at the market said they have been made to close shop
early in recent times for fear of such attacks, adding that a lasting solution
must be reached.
