Kisumu nurses down tools over unmet demands
The nurses through their union, the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) say they presented demands to the county but the county has flatly refused to listen to them.
KNUN Deputy National Secretary Maurice Opetu says the union was left with no option but to down tools adding that they will remain out of work until their demands are met.
Opetu says Kisumu County has declined to ratify the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) which had been ratified by the national government and the county must adopt it so that the nurses can benefit.
Opetu says Kisumu nurses are tired of begging for their salaries from the county government adding that most of them are leaving in tough conditions.
Speaking to the press, Opetu says the county must also move with speed to recruit more nurses so as to address the nursing shortage.
Andrew Omolo who is the KNUN Kisumu branch secretary says they shall not return to work in any of the county facilities until their demands are fully met.
Homa Bay County nurses have also downed tools, paralyzing medical services in all public health facilities in the county.
The nurses accuse the county government for failing to honor the implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the government and the Union.
The over 800 nurses working in various public health facilities in the county downed their tools.
