Kirinyaga: Police hunting 4 suspected cattle thieves as angry villagers burn vehicle
Four armed
gangsters escaped death by a whisker on Friday night after irate residents of
Ngomongo, Kirinyaga County, set ablaze a vehicle they were allegedly using to
ferry stolen livestock.
Nyumba Kumi elder
Jacob Thuku says the thugs were cornered after area residents noticed two
suspicious vehicles roaming around.
The crooks however
fled before the incident.
"We resorted
to setting the vehicle a blaze due to frustration and a spike in
cattle theft in this area and we wanted to teach them a lesson,"
Thuku told Citizen Digital.
Confirming the
incident, Mwea West sub-county Deputy Police Commander Sammy Beauttah
noted that the vehicle that was burnt down was allegedly stolen from Mururi
shopping centre in Gichugu by the suspects.
According
to Beauttah, the Toyota Probox vehicle belongs to William Nyamu; his wife was
forced to lie down before the thugs fled with the vehicle.
“We are urging
residents to avoid taking law in their hands even if there are cases of theft
in their village because right now Nyamu is counting losses, it is said we
found the stolen vehicle engulfed in flames.' Beauttah said.
Police are
currently tracing the four suspects.
