Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has flown to Mozambique to attend President Daniel Francisco Chapo's inauguration on Wednesday morning.

Kenya and Mozambique have enjoyed bilateral ties for the past four decades with the two administrations signing eight Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in August 2023 to increase trade volumes.

The program schedule for the inauguration indicates that the foreign leaders were slated to arrive at 9:30 am before the official commencement of the event at 10:00 am.

With Kindiki's departure and President William Ruto at the United Arab Emirates (UAE), National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula takes over the country's leadership temporarily.

Chapo's inauguration comes at a time when Mozambique experienced a wave of protests following the elections in October last year.

Chapo, 48, took 65 per cent of the votes in a poll that the opposition leaders contested; citing that the votes were doctored.

The protests saw thousands of demonstrators taking to the streets following the elections to dispute the results.

Police officers retaliated with brute force, with reports indicating that 300 people were killed during the protests.
