Khasoko Boys High School closed indefinitely after student dies in hospital
Khasoko Boys High
School in Bumula, Bungoma County, has been closed indefinitely, with only the
Form Four class remaining to continue with their studies.
This comes just a
week after one of the institution’s student died while undergoing medication at
the Bungoma County Referral Hospital.
The school
principal Daniel Masombo, speaking to Citizen Digital on phone, said the post-mortem
report showed that the boy died from acute malaria.
He added that the
school closure was a recommendation by the Ministry of Education following
tension that was arising after incidents of student deaths in other schools in the
neighbouring Kakamega County.
Bungoma Health CEC
Dr. Andrew Wamalwa said the post-mortem exercise also revealed that the student
had developed a perforation in the stomach that led to Peritonitis.
Peritonitis is a
condition that happens when the thin layer of tissue inside the abdomen
becomes inflamed due to an infection from bacteria or fungi.
Dr, Wamalwa noted
that already the county has sent a team to the school to collect food and water
samples that will be sent to Nairobi for further analysis to establish the cause of the infection.
The CEC however said
the death is an isolated case as there is no other similar incident that has
been reported in the institution.
