Key development projects Ruto, Sakaja unveiled during 5-day tour of Nairobi

Nairobi has witnessed five days of various activities as President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja launched multiple healthcare, housing, education, and infrastructure projects across the city.

Several key projects are now set for completion. One of the standout initiatives is the 400-bed Mutuini County Hospital, scheduled for completion by August 2025. The facility is expected to help decongest major referral hospitals by offering specialized services such as ICU, HDU, and renal care.

“This facility is crucial for the people of Nairobi, and we will ensure it is completed on time. The contractors will remain on-site, and I will be back in August to officially open it,” Ruto assured.

Governor Sakaja emphasized the hospital’s impact on healthcare accessibility.

“We are improving our health infrastructure to ensure Nairobians receive quality care close to home,” he said.

Another major project launched during the tour was the Umoja Sewerage System, part of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Program. This initiative aims to rehabilitate 260 kilometers of sewer lines in areas such as Umoja, Kayole, and Donholm.

“This will put an end to the perennial drainage challenges in Nairobi. We shall push together and ensure it is completed on time,” Ruto affirmed.

Governor Sakaja addressed concerns about poor drainage and sanitation, promising swift action.

“We cannot allow our people to live in areas prone to flooding and poor sanitation. These projects will restore dignity to Nairobi residents,” he stated.

Sakaja’s urban renewal program continues to take shape, with affordable housing projects underway in Woodley, while developments in Pangani and Jevanjee are ongoing. Additional projects in Bahati and Kariobangi North are awaiting approval.

The Southlands Lang’ata Affordable Housing Project, a Ksh.25 billion initiative, was another major highlight of the development tour. This project will deliver 15,000 housing units, helping to address Nairobi’s housing crisis while creating jobs.

“Today, we take a bold step in ensuring Nairobians have access to dignified, affordable housing,” Ruto remarked.

Governor Sakaja underscored the long-term impact of these housing projects.

“We are not just building houses—we are building communities. My administration is committed to ensuring that every Nairobi resident benefits from this transformation,” he said.

A major highlight of the tour was the expansion of the Dishi Na County school feeding program, which now serves over 316,000 learners in 230 public schools across all 17 sub-counties.

The leaders also launched the Zawadi Comprehensive School Central Kitchen, where Ruto approved Governor Sakaja’s request to include a chapati-making machine in the program.

“I have heard about it, and I will buy it. Governor, find a machine that can produce chapatis in large numbers, and we will incorporate it into Dishi Na County,” Ruto promised.

Sakaja reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that no child goes to school hungry.

“With this facility, students can now eat freshly made meals in a clean space, which is good for their health and well-being,” he confirmed.

Markets were also a key focus, with the Sakaja administration constructing at least 20 new markets to boost small businesses and create employment opportunities.

The President announced a Ksh 500 million investment to rebuild Toi Market, alongside the groundbreaking of the Riruta Modern Market in Dagoretti South. Other ongoing market constructions include Majimazuri, Jogoo Road, and Kangemi—all part of an initiative to provide structured business spaces for traders.

“We have agreed that this market will be completed in two months,” Ruto stated.

Governor Sakaja reiterated his commitment to empowering small businesses.

“In collaboration with the National Government, we have invested more than Ksh 500 million in modernizing Toi Market to make it safer and more conducive for traders. This is just one of many market projects we are working on,” Sakaja confirmed.

Education also remained a key focus, with the launch of PCEA Booth Girls High School and Lang’ata TVET College. Additionally, Ruto announced a Ksh 1 billion investment in Nairobi’s educational infrastructure to construct 3,500 new classrooms.

In Kibra, the leaders inspected the expansion of Ayany Primary and Junior School, where Ruto pledged to build 10 additional classrooms.

As the five-day tour concluded, it was evident that Nairobi is on the path to transformation.

“It is time to work and deliver. We must put aside our differences and divisive politics to serve the great people of this county and country,” Sakaja reiterated.

Now, Nairobi residents eagerly await the fulfillment of these promises.
