Keroka parents, students protest closure of varsity

Kisii University students and parents have protested against the impending closure of Keroka Campus over alleged non-compliance with the Commission on University Education (CUE) requirements.

During the demonstrations held in Keroka Town, Kisii on November 18, the students expressed fear that the government’s move will adversely affect most students who hailed from poor backgrounds.

Clinton Nyandoro, a third year student, claimed that he will be psychologically affected since his course work will be terminated.

“Besides loss of jobs for employees, I will not afford traveling long distances to the main campus in Kisii Town,” he noted.

A parent, Eric Abira, said that the campus was accessible to most students who commute from their homes.

He challenged the Kisii and Nyamira Governors to intervene and look for alternative sites for the campus.

Keroka Campus is set to be closed in January 2017 by the Ministry of Education in order to comply with the government’s directive because it allegedly lacks the key infrastructural facilities.

According to the Ministry, several satellite campuses should wind up their programs and join their respective main universities.
