Kericho County welcomes first Affordable Housing Project
This is the first project under the Affordable Housing Program in Kericho County with the President reiterating the Government's commitment to provide decent and affordable housing to Kenyans across the country.
Local leaders said the project will help resolve the housing deficit in the growing Kericho town and its environs.
The first phase of the project will deliver 320 Affordable Housing units alongside a commercial area, a mixed-use commercial development as well as the expansion of the sewer and water infrastructure.
The State Department for Housing and Urban Development has partnered with Pandaa Enterprises for the development of the housing units, with the developer expected to put up eight blocks of apartments comprising 60 social housing units, 160 affordable housing units and 100 market housing units.
In terms of pricing, the cheapest is priced at Ksh.1,260,000 with monthly tenant purchase payments of Ksh.4,800 while the most expensive will retail at Ksh 5,760,000 with monthly tenant purchase payments of Ksh.41,800.
According to Housing PS Charles Hinga, the project targets to provide direct employment to about 2000 locals as well as over 5000 indirectly.
PS Hinga says the Affordable Housing Program is designed to not only address the housing crisis in the country but also to provide employment opportunities to the millions of unemployed youths in line with the Kenya Kwanza manifesto.
He said the department in partnership with the developer has engaged sensitized approximately 300 jua kali artisans on Affordable Housing Project ringfenced materials and how they can benefit.
The artisans have since registered 4 Associations; Kericho Jua Kali, Kericho Jua Kali Dakeza Enterprises, Kericho Jua Kali Artisans and Kericho WETICAM, and are now engaging the contractor on way forward.
County elected leaders called on the residents to seize the opportunities even as they implored on the developer to ensure 90% of the workers are locals.
