Kenya’s medical board suspends Marie Stopes abortion services
Marie Stopes has been banned from conducting abortion services in Kenya.
The move came after the international NGO, that also provides contraception services, was outed over allegedly performing abortions on underage girls.
A statement from CitizenGO to newsrooms on Monday also claimed that Marie Stopes administered contraceptives without the knowledge of the girls’ parents.
““We are pleased with the Minister’s and his team’s decision to ban Marie Stopes’ activities in the country”, said Ann Kioko, spokeswoman for CitizenGO in Kenya.
“They were quick to solve this issue. However, we think that Marie Stopes’ management team should also be tried for violating the country’s laws. The Ministry has revoked their permit, but we are not convinced that they will stop carrying out their activities, since they have already broken the law once”, Kioko added.
Two weeks ago, the Ministry of Health ordered the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board to conduct an investigation into Marie Stopes activities.
The move came after CitizenGO gathered signatures from over 5.500 people for a petition against abortions that Marie Stopes was said to be carrying out in various centers.
