COVID-19: Kenya's records 427 new cases, positivity rate rises to 12.9 percent

The Ministry of Health on Thursday announced that 427 people tested positive for COVID-19 from a sample size of 3,307 tested in the last 24 hours, raising the positivity rate to the 12.9 per cent mark.

Of the cases, 369 are Kenyans while 58 are foreigners.

“221 are females and 206 are males, while the youngest is a one-year-old child and the oldest is 92 years old,” said the Ministry.

Total confirmed positive cases are now 328,319, while cumulative tests so far conducted are at 33,713,980.

The infections were recorded across the country as follows: Nairobi 225, Kiambu 73, Kitui 33, Kilifi 21, Siaya 21, Nakuru 13, Mombasa 8, Murang’a 8, Uasin Gishu 6, Nyeri 3, Tana River 3, Kericho 2, Laikipia 2, Lamu 2, Makueni 2, Turkana 2, Machakos, Meru and Nyandarua had one case each.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, in a statement to newsrooms on Thursday, said 80 patients recovered from the disease; all of them from the Home-Based and Isolation Care Program, thereby pushing the total recoveries to 319,983.

However, no patient succumbed to the disease; therefore, the cumulative fatalities remain at 5,651.

“There are 47 patients currently admitted in our health facilities, while 3,065 are under the Home-Based Isolation and Care program,” noted CS Kagwe.

“Four patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on supplemental oxygen while four are in the general wards on supplemental oxygen. No patient is in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).”

On the vaccination exercise, the CS revealed that a total of 18,523,074 vaccines have been administered across the country. Of these, 16,616,761 are doses administered to the adult population (18 years and above) as of June 15, 2022.

He further stated that 1,475,585 doses were administered to those between 15 to 17 years; 38,869 are below 15 years but above 12 years, while 391,859 are booster doses.

He stated that the total number of vaccines administered in the last 24 hours is 19,039 while the total number of people fully vaccinated is 7,378.

“Proportion of adults fully vaccinated was 31.4%. The government is working towards vaccinating a targeted population of 27,246,033,” added Kagwe.
