Kenyans want their rights to be respected: Dutch King tells President Ruto

King Alexander, who is in the country for a three-day State visit, said that his tour would focus on key issues such as human rights, good governance and accountability. 

He revealed that he would engage the Kenyan youth at the Netherlands embassy to understand their concerns. 

"The people of Kenya, like those in the Netherlands, want their rights as free citizens to be respected and their voices heard, I'm pleased that our country's strong relationship allows us to devote attention during the visit to issues such as human rights, good governance and accountability," he said.

"We are grateful to discuss the concerns existing in these areas. Later this morning, we will meet young Kenyans to get their views on recent developments."

Following a meeting at State House, the two leaders signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and a letter of intent. 

King Alexander expressed confidence that the MoUs would enhance stronger bilateral ties between the two nations. 

“Kenya is a self-assured nation that is proud of its economic performance, democracy, institutions and international role. This visit shows how interests are aligned and how close these two countries are," he said. 

The three MoUs will focus on key areas such as trade, agriculture and tourism. The two leaders will also explore other sectors including security and climate action.

In the past months, Kenyan police officers have been accused of using excessive force when dealing with protestors and carrying out abductions since the onset of the anti-government demonstrations in June last year.

Data from the Kenya Human Rights Commission reveals that 29 of the 82 people reported to have disappeared since June remain unaccounted for, raising safety concerns across the country.
