The National Police Service (NPS) says the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission team led by Kenyan police officers has continued to register success in its fight against gangs that have controlled Haiti since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021.

According to an update from the National Police Service, the team recaptured Auorite Portuaire Nationale (APN) port from gangs and cleared roadblocks that had been erected along the road leading to the gang-ridden town of Ganthier.

The strides have earned recognition from high-ranking officials who have toured the team’s headquarters in the past two weeks, added NPS.

On July 19, 2024, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the United States ambassador to the United Nations visited the MSS team at the MSS headquarters.

On Friday, July 26, the Head of Haiti Presidential Transition Council Edgard Leblanc also paid a visit to MSS Force Commander Godfrey Otunge and later addressed the MSS team.

“National Police Service officers in Haiti reiterate their commitment to continue working closely with HNP and the people of Haiti, in discharging their mandate to help in the restoration of law and order in Haiti,” the statement read in part.

Kenya has dispatched over 600 officers as part of their mission to address gang-based violence in Haiti that has led to over 500,000 people losing their homes and close to 5 million experiencing severe hunger.

The MSS team comprises of African and Caribbean nations including Kenya, Benin, Barbados, Chad and Bangladesh whose main role involves patrolling and guarding the country’s main infrastructure.

Foreign countries, who surprisingly opted not to send their troops, have pledged to support the mission by making financial contributions.

However, the United Nations reveals that an estimated Ksh.3 billion has been raised against a target of Ksh.12 billion
