Kenyan interns earn more than new doctors – Health CS Nakhumicha

Health CS Susan Nakhumicha vetted by parliament on October 19, 2022.

New Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has highlighted what she alleges are salary inconsistencies she has come across in her new ministry.

Speaking on JKL, Nakhumicha, the new Health CS said that inconsistencies in the ministry have seen interns earn higher salaries than newly-employed doctors.

“Kenya is a country where interns earn more than actual doctors when they are deployed. For example, a medical intern earns close to Ksh.200,000 while when a new doctor is reporting earning Ksh.104,000. Those inconsistencies there are things that need to be looked into,” Nakhumicha said.

The sentiments have attracted the attention of the Kenya Medical Association (KMA), which now seeks to meet Nakhumicha to discuss the said inconsistencies.

On the challenges of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), the CS urged Kenyans to be patient and make sacrifices as the results will be seen years to come.

“There are some tough decisions we will take right now but will see results in 5-10 years to come. As we journey together, I request for their indulgence and sacrifices,” she said.

While taking over the Health Ministry on Monday, October 31, Nakhumicha noted that many officials heading various departments are serving in an acting capacity, saying she will look into the issue.
