Their goal is to foster a culture of early literacy and ensure that young children develop strong reading habits from an early age.
Developed by the global NGO Worldreader, BookSmart has reached nearly 22 million readers since its launch in 2010.
Elizabeth Wasunna, Chair of Worldreader’s Kenya Board, highlighted the app’s impact, stating:
"Families from all backgrounds are embracing the joy of reading and inspiring others with their stories."
Worldreader CEO Rebecca Chandler Leege underscored the urgency of addressing the reading crisis, pointing out that many children lack structured reading routines at home. The organization’s data-driven approach helps caregivers establish literacy habits that enhance language skills, cognitive development, and school readiness.
During the event, Worldreader also introduced its Reading Circle, a digital platform that connects parents, donors, and partners to track the impact of literacy initiatives.
"By harnessing collective action and social media, we can put BookSmart into the hands of all young families in Kenya," said Chandler Leege.
