Kenya unveils new advanced radiotherapy system for cancer treatment

The government has announced the acquisition of highly advanced medical equipment for critical treatment of cancer in the country and across.

The state-of-the-art Cobalt 60 radiotherapy calibration system, the first of its kind in East Africa, was procured through a collaborative effort between KEBS and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). 

The Cobalt 60 radiotherapy calibration system is a sophisticated medical technology used in radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer.

Speaking during the unveiling of the new equipment at the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) headquarters, Trade Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano hailed this development as a significant advancement in healthcare for Kenya.

She underscored the crucial role of precise calibration in administering cancer treatment, emphasizing its profound impact on patient safety and therapeutic efficacy.

KEBS Managing Director Esther Ngari, highlighted the years of partnership with the IAEA, dating back to 2008, which culminated in this transformative acquisition.

“This collaboration has been instrumental in fostering innovation and capacity building in cancer treatment,” she noted.

Also present at the launch were Principal Secretary-State Department for Industry Dr. Juma Mukhwana, National Standards Council Chairman Peter Munyiri, KEBS Managing Director Ngari, IAEA’s Director General Rafael Mariona Gross, and Technical Cooperation Director for Africa Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak.

Alongside launch of the technology, KEBS unveiled its Strategic Plan 2023-2027 aimed at bolstering the competitiveness of locally manufactured products in the global market.

 Trade Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, who launched the plan, emphasized the importance of adherence to quality standards in penetrating international markets, particularly for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
