Kenya Railways resumes commuter train service in select routes
The Kenya
Railways Corporation (KRC) has announced the partial resumption of commuter
train service after suspension due to heavy rainfall.
KRC on April 24 suspended the commuter train which ferries commuters to and from the Nairobi
city centre daily across five routes; Embakasi, SGR Link and Syokimau, Limuru, Lukenya and
Ruiru.
On Monday,
Kenya Railways said it would resume service on Embakasi Village, Lukenya, SGR
Link and Syokimau routes from Tuesday.
However,
Limuru and Ruiru routes would remain suspended due to ongoing repair works on
the railway lines, it said.
“We also wish to advise the public that commuter train
services are subject to change at short notice, depending on weather conditions
and other safety considerations. We appreciate your patience and understanding
as we work to restore normalcy,” read a public notice from KRC’s management.
Flooding from ongoing rainfall in many parts of Kenya has
killed 229 people according to government figures released on Monday.
Seventy-five people are still missing, 46,937 households are
displaced and property of unaccounted value as well as public infrastructure destroyed.
