Kenya Railways has announced an increase in train fare prices following the rise in the cost of fuel in the country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Kenya Railways said the upward review of prices will affect the Madaraka Express services, Nairobi Commuter Rail Service as well as the Kisumu and Nanyuki Safari trains.

A notice issued by Kenya Railways shows the cost of travelling by SGR on First Class from Nairobi to Mombasa will rise by Ksh.1,500 from Ksh.3,000 to ksh.4,500.

On the other hand, passengers using Economy Class on the Nairobi-Mombasa route will pay Ksh.500 more as the cost rises to Ksh.1,500 from the previous Ksh.1,000.

This increase is informed by changes in the energy and petroleum sector where prices of fuel have significantly increased thus affecting the cost of our operations,” said Kenya Railways, in a statement.

The new fares come into effect on January 1, 2024.

According to Kenya Railways, customers making advance purchases for the Madaraka Express Passenger Service will notice the adjusted fares as of November 1, 2023, to take into account the advance ticket purchasing window of 60 days.

The adjusted prices for the Kisumu and Nanyuki routes are yet to be released.

Currently, a litre of Super Petrol is retailing at Ksh. 217.36, diesel at Ksh. 205.47 and kerosene at Ksh. 205.06 in Nairobi.

This follows the recent fuel price increase of Ksh. 5.72 for petrol, diesel by Ksh. 4.48 and kerosene by Ksh. 2.45 per litre.
