Kenya Power CEO condemns attack on staff after assault by Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai

This comes a day after Kitui East Member of Parliament (MP) Nimrod Mbai was captured on video beating up a Kenya Power engineer for allegedly disconnecting an illegal power line at his home in Kitengela, Kajiado County.

In a statement on Wednesday, Siror noted that MP Mbai's incident was the latest to be observed among many attacks which have been staged on Kenya Power's staff while on duty.

"As an entity that prioritizes the welfare of its staff and the public, we condemn this incident and we wish to categorically state that we do not condone any form of violence, at least not on our staff while on official duty," read part of the statement.

Siror further asserted that the organisation will not slacken its target to weed out individuals erecting illegal and dangerous power connections, arguing that they paralyze the quality of power supply and ultimately cause huge losses to the company.

"Last year, we lost 214 units of transformers valued at an average of Shs.800,000 per unit due to overloading from illegal connections and vandalism," he said.

"The Company will intensify network surveillance and continue to work closely with the National Government Administration Officers and other security agencies to stamp out all illegal activities."

Siror also invited any reports from members of the public regarding cases of vandalism, illegal connections, theft of power and any other suspicious activity on the electricity network through 97771 (call or text) or the nearest authorities.

Meanwhile, MP Mbui has been apprehended and the matter is before the courts.
