Kenya Power announces final push for prepaid meter updates ahead of deadline

The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) is urging customers to update their prepaid metres before the August 31st deadline to avoid service disruptions.

This reminder comes after the launch of a campaign in mid-June encouraging all prepaid customers to upgrade their metre software to ensure continued access to electricity.

Kenya Power's Managing Director and CEO, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror, stated, "We have received a positive response to the update initiative, and we thank those who have already completed the process. We have scheduled updates for all prepaid metres, and we encourage those who have not yet done so to do so before the deadline to avoid service disruptions.

To update their metres, customers must purchase at least one unit of electricity and enter the codes provided in the token SMS.

Following that, Kenya Power will SMS two codes: a reset code and an updated code. The updating process is free of charge.

Before updating, customers should ensure that all previous tokens have been loaded into their metres. Failure to update by the deadline will prevent the metre from accepting new electricity tokens.

The update is part of a global initiative to standardise prepaid metres by implementing the Standard Transfer Specification (STS), a universal method for improving token security.

Dr. Siror continued, "The phased approach has helped manage customer demand and reduce system delays, making it easier for customers to purchase tokens and receive update codes."

Customers experiencing problems with the SMS platform can contact the company's self-service platform by dialling *977.
