Kenya on high alert for Marburg virus amid outbreak in Rwanda

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has issued a high alert in response to an outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) in Rwanda.

While no cases have been reported in Kenya, officials are taking precautions due to the two countries' close travel links.

The Marburg virus is a highly contagious and deadly disease, with fatality rates of up to 88%.

Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, body weakness, and bleeding from multiple areas.

In a statement, the Ministry confirmed that it has increased surveillance at all entry points to Kenya and urged the public to remain vigilant.

To avoid close contact with infected or suspected individuals, seek immediate medical attention if Marburg-like symptoms appear, and avoid sharing personal items such as towels, utensils, or clothing.

The Ministry also advised the public to wear protective gear when caring for someone suspected of having MVD, to wash their hands frequently with soap and water or to use hand sanitiser, and to exercise caution when visiting affected areas.

Travellers are encouraged to check health advisories for their destinations and stay up to date on the latest health information.

Citizens are also encouraged to report any unusual fever, bleeding, or other concerning symptoms, especially if they have recently travelled to areas affected by Marburg Virus Disease.

For further information or to report cases, please contact the Ministry at 0729 47 14 14, 0732 35 35 35, or 719.
