Kenya Kwanza should rule for the next 50 years - Didmus Barasa

The legislator believes that the President William Ruto-led coalition should maintain its grip at the nation's helm similar to South Africa's African National Congress and Tanzania's Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).

ANC has governed South Africa since 1994 and CCM has ruled Tanzania since 1995.

Speaking on Monday, Barasa said that after President Ruto's expected 10-year rule, all his successors should come from Kenya Kwanza. 

"We can achieve that purpose by not necessarily removing the cap on the term limit but ensuring the presidents who will come after His Excellency Samoei Ruto will pick up from the progress that Ruto will have made from that time," he said speaking to K24.

Kenya Kwanza attained leadership during the 2022 General Election and leaders allied to the coalition have hinted at planning to alter the constitutional provisions of presidential term limits.

Last year, Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei proposed that the presidential term limit should be extended from the current five to seven years.

He argued that the current term limit is insufficient for an elected President to deliver on his mandate and promises to Kenyans.

However, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), the political party to which Cherargei is a member, distanced itself from the sentiments.

The party Secretary General Cleophas Malala termed Cherargei's views as superfluous and peripheral.  

Earlier Fafi MP Salah Yakub had equally proposed a plan to scrap the two-term-presidential term and set the age limit for contesting for the same seat at 75.

According to the UDA legislator, a presidential term should not be limited to only two terms, arguing that it denies performing leaders an opportunity to further develop the nation.
