Kenya Kwanza drops MP Adan Keynan from bipartisan team as demanded by Azimio
Bipartisan talks to end the stalemate in the country are now set to resume after Kenya Kwanza finally acquiesced to Azimio la
Umoja One Kenya coalition party’s demand to drop Eldas Member of Parliament
Adan Keynan from its negotiation team.
This comes after Azimio, in an earlier
letter, announced that it was willing to suspend its planned Thursday
anti-government demonstrations if Kenya Kwanza acceded to its demand on Keynan.
Azimio
co-principal and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka stated: “We, in Azimio la Umoja
One Kenya announce, on a without prejudice basis, that we are prepared to go
back to the Bipatisan talks with our opposite side in Kenya Kwanza and are
prepared to stand down the demonstration scheduled for Thursday, 4th May, 2023,
provided that Kenya Kwanza recuses Hon. Adan Kenan from the bipatisan committee
and immediately announces his replacement on the said committee.”
Kenya Kwanza, in a subsequent letter signed by its Parliamentary
Majority Leaders Kimani Ichung’wah and Aaron Cheruiyot, welcomed Azimio’s olive
branch to call off the protests.
The ruling team said it had reached out to the coalition's top brass as well as MP Keynan over the matter and the legislator had willingly agreed to relinquish his seat in the team for the greater good.
“We appreciate the conciliatory route
taken by our Azimio counterparts to engage in talks and stand down the planned
street demonstrations should Kenya Kwanza recuse Eldas Member of Parliament,
Adan Keynan,”
stated Kenya Kwanza.
“As we have always stated, we are willing
to bend backward for the sake of the progress of the country, national unity,
and stability of the nation.”
The letter added: “We have consulted with
Mweshimiwa Keynan and the coalition’s top leadership and the Hon. Aden Wehliye
Keynan has graciously agreed in the greater interest of the county to recuse
himself from the bi-partisan committee.”
Kenya Kwanza now says it has nominated Saku
MP Dido Rasso to step into Keynan’s shoes in the bipartisan talks committee.
