Kenya aviation workers to join KQ pilots on strike
As the Kenya Airways (KQ)
pilot strike continues, Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) are set to join in
withdrawing their services.
In a statement by KAWU dated
November 5, Secretary General Moss Ndiema
said that the strike will happen from 2pm.
He said a court order issued on August 15, 2022 had given KAWU workers the go ahead to
go on strike following a stalemate as regards the failure to implement a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
"Pursuant to the said
court order, this is to instruct and advice all unionisable employees at KAA to
commence the strike at 2pm today, 5th November, 2022 in compliance with the
court order," Mr. Ndiema said in the statement.
"For those who are
still at home waiting to report for their shifts, we advise you to stay away
and not to report to work. Please do not assemble at your work stations or hold
any gatherings or processions."
Mr. Ndiema likewise guaranteed
all unionisable workers that they would
not lose their jobs by taking industrial action as instructed.
"Please note that as
per the Court Order, all unionisable employees who shall engage in the
withdrawal of labour shall not be replaced, victimized or harassed and shall
only return to work upon the Union being fully satisfied with the terms of the
new CBA.
"All unionisable
employees shall have their full salaries and benefits paid without being placed
at any disadvantage whatsoever. Therefore, this is a protected strike in
accordance with the law."
