Kenya, African countries push for Ksh.168 trillion climate financing at Cop29
Kenya has joined African countries in calling for adopting the continent’s 1.3 trillion USD (Ksh.168.35 trillion) demand to the Global North as part of the climate financing target by 2030.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, representing President William Ruto at this year’s climate change conference in Baku, says the major concern is that financial commitments have not been actualized, clawing back the gains made in previous conferences.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the
gathering of world leaders that climate change financing is not charity but an
obligation that must be met during the ongoing COP29 summit.
Antonio Guterres said, “Climate action is not charity… paying
is an obligation.”
Guterres says the world is marking time with the effects of climate change sweeping across nations, threatening the existence of human life and human rights.
During his address, the UN boss warned that
increasing emissions pose a danger of unimaginable proportions to the planet,
resulting in climate instability that has swept homes and dried grasslands,
leaving the world’s population at the mercy of wealthy nations in the Global
North.
“Climate financing must be done… this COP29 must release the money or the world will perish," he added.
Wednesday is the d-day of negotiations as countries walk into the conference with their irreducible minimums.
