Kayole quack doctor arrested after defrauding patient Ksh.60K, misdiagnosing him with liver disorder
A quack doctor in Kayole, Nairobi County, has
been arrested for allegedly defrauding patients by operating a non-registered
medical clinic while posing to be a qualified medical officer.
James
Waweru Njenga, 45, was nabbed by a contingent of detectives and officers from
the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) while at his facility, Axis Medical Clinic
& Lab Services, located in Kayole Phase 1 following a complaint by one of
his patients.
According
to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Friday,
the patient had filed a police complaint after being misdiagnosed with a liver
disorder and spending over Ksh.60,000 on lab tests last month.
“In
the filed complaint, the 31-year-old male victim indicated that between March 1
and March 27, 2024, Waweru charged him over Ksh.60,000 for sample tests
allegedly at laboratories in some of the country's renowned medical facilities,
before ‘diagnosing’ him with a liver disorder,” stated the DCI.
The
investigative agency revealed that the impostor, after the false liver disorder
diagnosis, went ahead to prescribe some drugs but the patient noticed that his condition
only seemed to be deteriorating.
The
patient then sought the opinion of another specialist at the Nairobi West
Hospital where lab tests turned negative for the condition.
“Launching
investigations, detectives uncovered that the medical reports issued to the
patient by the quack purporting to be lab results from German Medical Centre,
Jubaland Imaging Centre and Mater Hospital were all fake and falsified,” noted
the DCI.
PPB
also confirmed that the suspect neither had any proof of registration as a
medical officer nor held a business registration certificate.
The suspect
is currently being detained at the Kamukunji Police Station awaiting
arraignment.
