Kawira Mwangaza named as Umoja na Maendeleo party leader

Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been named the new party leader of Umoja na Maendeleo Party

Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been named the new party leader of Umoja na Maendeleo Party, taking over from Charles Wambora Mugambi.

In a gazette notice dated July 4, the Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu announced the changes, explaining that any person opposed to Mwangaza's new role to provide a written submission to her office within seven days.

In other changes, Victor Koome Mwangaza will take over as the Deputy Party Leader from Haron Shamala. Miriam Karwira will serve as the party's national chairperson.

Robert Murega Rimberia was appointed as the party's Secretary-General, succeeding Stella Kagendo.

"Any person with written submissions concerning the intended changes by the political party shall within seven (7) days from the date of this publication make their written submissions to the Registrar of Political Parties," the notice read in part.

The former governor's new appointment came after she ditched the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), with her husband Murega Baichu claiming that the ruling party orchestrated Mwangaza's impeachment.

In August last year, Meru MCAs impeached Mwangaza after two unsuccessful attempts.

She was accused of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and gross violation of the constitution. Mwangaza was succeeded by Isaac Mutuma, who was sworn in three days after the impeachment.
