Karen Nyamu was asked her opinion on Finance Bill 2024, her answer threw everyone off
Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu's attempt to
explain the contents of the Finance Bill 2024 left reporters confused as she
struggled to clearly interpret her understanding of the Bill.
When asked
what her thoughts on the controversial Bill were, Nyamu appeared to stutter at
first, before delving into a scattered defence of the Bill and of President William
Ruto's tax proposals.
"First
of all, Finance Bill inafanyiwa National Assembly, not in the Senate. But what
I know about the Kenya Kwanza administration, what we promised people on the
ground is that the economy itakuwa bottom up," she said.
Nyamu went
on to throw around her version of the Bill's supposed positivities, claiming
that the government was taxing wealthier Kenyans while relieving the common
mwananchi.
"Unaweza
kuwa unalia Ruto anatutax sana, na saa hiyo ametoa tax ya wale watu wako chini
ameongeza ya wale watu wana import vitanda," she said.
"Unazusha
nini na ni kitu hata haikuhusu? Find out what does this Finance Bill say, kuna
tax imeongezwa, inakuhusu?"
Further
throwing everyone off, Nyamu went on to suggest that the Bill's contentions
were the creations of the opposition and not necessarily based on facts.
"Wachana na social media. We have opposition politics na lazima wakae wakipinga serikali. Ikuwe wana make sense, wanapiga propaganda, lazima wapige serikali. Na sisi tunawaskiza," she claimed.
X influencer Omwamba kicked off the condemnation, saying, "UDA Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu amechoma. Yaani Karen Njeri Nyamu doesn't know what is in the Finance Bill? I can't believe Karen Nyamu is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya!"
Another user said, "The moment she looked right, left then right again (as if crossing the road) after the question was asked, I knew she had zero content!"
On his part, user Jared Ongae said, "This speaks volumes of the kind of leaders we have! And she is not the only one. Majority of those leaders only know what they hear on social media that’s why you hear them say uncouth logic and you wonder how they go into those offices."
Equally unimpressed was Esther Wamae who wondered how Kenyan leadership had suddenly sunk so low.
"How did she get to where she is? What criteria was used? What's the use of having a law degree if you're this clueless on matters governance? How did we fumble this bad? From the likes of Martha Karua to now this!" she lamented.
The Finance
Bill, 2024 was published on May 9 and is presently undergoing public
participation.
The Bill
contains tax proposals that the Kenya Kwanza government wants to use to raise
revenue and finance its ambitious projects.
One of the
proposals is the introduction of a Motor Vehicle Tax, at a rate of 2.5 per cent
of the vehicle's value.
