Kalonzo threatens to lead street protests over proposed tax reforms

Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has warned of potential street protests in response to the government’s plans to reintroduce a section of the withdrawn Finance Bill 2024.

Musyoka criticized the proposed tax increases, arguing that Kenyans are already burdened by excessive taxation and that the government’s move would disproportionately benefit a few, while further straining the majority of citizens.

Speaking after attending a church service in Nairobi's Umoja area, Musyoka led the opposition to Kimoroni Stadium in Murang’a County, where they participated in a gospel concert.

There, he continued his vocal criticism of President William Ruto’s administration, particularly condemning the Finance Bill’s provisions.

“We cannot remain silent while Kenyans suffer,” Musyoka declared, emphasizing that the opposition would not stand by as the government imposes additional taxes. “If they attempt to bring back the Finance Bill, we will not keep quiet. This is a revolution,” he added.

Musyoka’s remarks were supported by other opposition leaders, including Eugene Wamalwa, who joined him in criticizing the government.

Wamalwa stressed that the opposition was seeking a protector for the people, saying, “We are here with Kalonzo, and we are fighting to protect Kenyans, not just the wealthy few.”

Musyoka also praised the protests by Gen Z earlier this year, calling them part of a larger movement to ensure that the voices of ordinary Kenyans are heard. “Their efforts will not be in vain,” he affirmed.

In addition, Musyoka and his allies voiced strong opposition to proposals by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei to extend the term limits for elected leaders, urging him to abandon the idea “like a hot potato.”

They described such proposals as out of touch with the needs of ordinary Kenyans, calling for a focus on reforms that would benefit the majority rather than the political elite.

As tensions rise over the Finance Bill and other government policies, Musyoka and the opposition have vowed to continue challenging the administration’s decisions, warning of more demonstrations if their concerns are not addressed.
