Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused the Kenya Kwanza government of failing to regulate the sale of cheap imported rice to protect the farmers from unfair competition.

Speaking in Ngurubani, Kirinyaga County on Saturday, Kalonzo said President William Ruto's administration has failed to bring to an end farmersagony that has lasted for many years.

The Wiper party boss accused the government of issuing licences to some individuals to import Pakistani rice despite Mwea farmers counting heavy losses for their produce over the years after well-connected individuals flooded the market with cheap commodities.

“The problem with this government is failing to take responsibility to ensure the issues of Wananchi are addressed,” Kalonzo remarked.

The former Vice President said that while in office with former President Mwai Kibaki, they worked towards ensuring the water floor in Thiba Dam to ensure continuous flow of water at all seasons and increase production of rice.

“Restrict importation then you will see the growth of our people. Why are we creating job opportunities for traders from other countries yet denying our people jobs here,” said Kalonzo.

The Wiper leader claimed there are importers of rice who add cheap imported rice to the Mwea Pishori rice, reducing its quality.
