Two officials from the Kakamega Civil
Registration Department were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly soliciting and
receiving bribes from applicants seeking civil registration documents.
Boniface Mutsunga, the Civil Registrar
stationed at the Kakamega Huduma Centre, and Amos Yegon, a Civil Registration
Officer, are alleged to solicit bribes to expedite service delivery.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission
(EACC) said the bribes paid were reportedly funnelled through a privately
operated M-Pesa payment Till Number, pointing to a coordinated bribery
syndicate.
At the time of their arrest, the officials
had allegedly just received Ksh.2,500 to facilitate the processing of a birth
certificate.
The suspects were detained at Bungoma
Police Station awaiting further processing at the anti-graft agency's Western regional
