A mob of about 100 men in the Entasopia
area of Magadi, Kajiado County, on Wednesday attacked police officers who
arrested a man over rape allegations, demanding his release.
Police arrested 27-year-old Samuel Timonyi after a 19-year-old woman accused him of rape.
As the officers left the village with Timonyi,
the crowd demanded he be released, saying “police and security agencies were
listening to women and interfering with cases that should be resolved by elders,”
according to a police report.
The mob began hurling stones at the police
and in the ensuing melee, an officer was injured on the head.
“He was rushed to Ngomongo clinic for
treatment and thereafter to Magadi Hospital for further treatment,” the report said.
The officers still managed to drive away
with the suspect and he was detained pending arraignment at the
Ngong Law Courts.
