Judge in Winnie Waruru's Ksh.100 million U.S healthcare fraud case retires

United States Senior District Court Judge George A. O’Toole Jr.

United States Senior District Court Judge George A. O’Toole Jr. has retired after more than 50 years in legal practice.

According to a notice by the U.S. Judiciary on Monday, the 75-year-old's term came to an end, and was replaced by Myong J. Joun, of Massachusetts.

Joun will now be the U.S. District Judge for the District of Massachusetts.

Before his retirement, Judge O’Toole was hearing a case against the Kenyan-born nurse, Winnie Waruru who pleaded guilty in a Ksh. 12 billion home health care fraud scheme in September last year.

Waruru was charged alongside her co-accused, Faith Newton, for swindling Massachusetts State of the amount through making false claims and billings to a programme that provides health coverage for low-income earners.

The federal judge who is a father of two received his commission on May 26, 1995, and assumed senior status, two decades later on January 1, 2018.

He is famous for presiding over the 2015 trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, one of the perpetrators of the Boston Marathon bombing.
