A number of Kenyan journalists deployed to cover Madaraka Day celebrations in Homa Bay County were injured after an assault by security officers.

The officers assaulted the journalists at the entrance of the Raila Odinga Stadium, where the national celebrations were taking place.

Among the injured were Royal Media Services journalist Ephantus Maina and Nation Media Group’s Mable Achieng. Two other journalists from the Standard Media Group were also assaulted.

Unknown persons also stole phones and other valuable items from the media crew as they sought entry into the stadium to cover the fete.

Violence at the stadium broke out in the early morning, when groups of youth allegedly ferried in by politicians to fill the stadium began targeting attendees, stealing mobile phones, money, and other valuables.
