Joho warns foreign miners against illegal invasion of Nyanza sites

Cabinet Secretary for Mining and Blue economy Ali Hassan Joho has warned foreign and large scale mining companies against invading artisanal gold mining sites in Nyanza region.

Joho says there is a lot of illegal mining activities which are being conducted by large scale miners especially in the Nyanza region and therefore warned that the vice must stop.

He stated the government shall not allow such large scale miners to intimidate the artisanal miners, reiterating that they will only be allowed to operate after following a proper procedure.

The Cabinet Secretary who spoke at Wich-Lum beach in Bondo sub-county during a tour of fish landing sites within Siaya County, has instructed the National Government Administration officers to ensure that those operating illegally are all arrested and prosecuted.

Joho said that the law requires that a proper public participation be conducted and all other requisite procedures followed before a mining license can be issued.

He asserted that if mining activities in Nyanza are gotten right, then the region can realize proper socio-economic growth.

On the security of the Kenyan fishermen in Lake Victoria, the Cabinet Secretary said that there is need for a framework for solving the perennial attacks by Ugandan authorities once and for all.

The CS also toured Usenge and Asembo Bay beaches in Usigu and Rarieda sub-counties respectively.
