JKUAT students block Thika Road as they demand justice for murdered comrade Denzel Omondi

Hundreds of students from JKUAT students block Thika Super Highway.

Hundreds of students from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) on Friday took to the busy Thika Super Highway and stormed the Juja Police Station to demand justice for the death of their fellow student, Denzel Omondi.

The third-year student died under mysterious circumstances shortly after participating in anti-finance protests at the National Assembly on June 25. His lifeless body was discovered on July 6 in a deserted quarry in Juja.

From the gates of the university’s main campus in Juja to the gates of Juja Police Station, the students unleashed their anger and grief over the mysterious death of their fellow comrade.

“It has affected us deeply as comrades. People are dying…people are being abducted…,” said one of the students, Gastine.

The students, who suspended learning activities and flooded the streets, barricaded the Thika Superhighway, paralyzing transport for the better part of the day.

They blamed the DCI for their laxity in the investigations and demanded answers and justice for their fallen comrade.

“The postmortem says he was there for three days…how about the other days?” said Moses Obura.

“Denzel is being buried on the 22nd, and they keep saying they will update us...when!” posed Justice Ogutu.

Denzel Omondi, a third-year Quantity Survey student, went missing at the onset of anti-finance bill protests in Nairobi.

On June 25, Omondi was among the protesters who stormed the National Assembly and was last seen at the university the following day before disappearing on June 27.

A week later, Denzel’s lifeless body was discovered at a quarry in Gachororo, Juja, Kiambu County.

An autopsy revealed that Denzel died by drowning. However, his family and human rights defenders are not convinced by the findings.
