JKUAT student pleads not guilty in Belinda Wekesa murder, granted Ksh.500K bond

After 30 days in detention, murder suspect Elvis Kibiwot Torotoich was back in court as Juja detectives presented him before Lady Justice Florence Muchemi.

The second-year Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) student was formally informed of the charges against him and pleaded not guilty to the murder of Belinda Wekesa.

The court granted him a bond of Ksh.500,000.

“The next mention will be on May 5, until then the suspect to be detained at Nairobi remand If he fails to pay bond,” ruled Muchemi.

Detectives allege that Torotoich invited 19-year-old Belinda, a second-year student at Uzuri Institute in Thika to his rented apartment in Juja, where she was found dead on February 7, 2025.

According to investigators, the deceased was in the apartment with her boyfriend, Toroitich, and another man when a quarrel broke out.

In the heat of the altercation, Toroitich allegedly attacked Belinda and attempted to stab the other man. Belinda then fled towards the balcony, but the suspect reportedly chased after her and pushed her from the fourth floor.

Witnesses claim that after the fatal fall, Toroitich attempted to conceal the crime by hiding her body.

Key to the investigation is CCTV footage capturing the moments leading up to her death. Detectives are analyzing the footage and recording statements from a witness who was present during the incident.
