Jimmy Kibaki makes comeback months after retiring from politics

Former President Mwai Kibaki's son Jimmy Kibaki has made a return to politics after a 4-month hiatus to attend to urgent family matters.

In May 2024, Jimmy resigned as the deputy leader of the New Democrats party, a position he had held for three years.

In the Gazette notice published on Friday, Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu announced changes to the party's leadership, naming Jimmy as the Deputy Leader.

Other changes saw Daniel Musembi replace Fredrick Muthangya as the Secretary-General, Simon Ngunjiri replace Roseline Ashepete as the Deputy secretary-general, and Daniel Kipkorir take over the Deputy Treasurer position from Khadija Ahmed.

Jimmy has been perceived as the proverbial heir to his father's throne after he ruled Kenya for two presidential terms.

Further, the Kibaki family has been involved in politics for quite a long time, with Jimmy making entry into the political arena in 1991 when he joined the Democratic Party of Kenya.

He then jumped ship to the National Alliance Party of Kenya which later merged with the Liberal Democratic Party to form the National Rainbow Coalition in 2002.

Jimmy was also involved in the creation of the Party of National Unity before ultimately joining the New Democrats party in 2021.

"Over the past 33 years, I have been intimately involved in various political initiatives in this country, including the formation and management of various political parties," Jimmy stated in a statement announcing his retirement from politics in May 2024.

"At this time in my life, it has become apparent to me that I need to devote all my time to urgent family and business matters that require my full attention," he added.
