Naftali Kinuthia, the suspect who hacked to death medical student Ivy Wangeci on Friday confessed to killing her.

Kinuthia says he regrets the incident and that he was overwhelmed by anger over what he termed as a love relationship gone sour.

"This is an incident that I have regretted forever. After thinking about it and reflecting, I knew it would not have happened since there were many ways to get around the situation without causing the death of an innocent person," Kinuthia told the court.

"Since that day I have felt like I have been secluded from society since killing a person is unacceptable in society."

Kinuthia who revealed that his father died of a lung disease during the period he has been in prison, lamented how Ivy's family might have been affected by the death of their kin.

"All this time I have been in prison… I was told that my father was ailing of lung disease and passed away while I was in prison," he stated.

"The feeling of losing a person is hard and I feel bad for the victim’s family. If there was anything that could be done now, we could do it."

Wangechi was hacked to death outside the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret on April 9, 2019, in broad daylight.

28-year-old Kinuthia at the time, who had previously denied killing her, is said to have come from Nairobi, armed with an axe and a knife.

He reportedly lured her out of class and hit her on the head with the axe before slitting her throat.

On why he killed Wangechi, the suspect at the time told the Eldoret East DCI boss, Ali Kingi, that heartbreak occasioned by frequent disappointments is what had made him brutally take away the life of his alleged lover.

He claimed he had invested money and emotions in the woman, but his love and financial kindness were not reciprocated as per his expectations.

Wangechi was laid to rest in Mahiga, Nyeri County on Thursday, April 18, 2019.
